This is my very first oil painting and sparked this journey. During my early days in Seattle, I used to hitch rides with my teammates to an indoor soccer arena in the industrial area of South Seattle on Friday nights. Each week, as we drove past, this building captivated me with its unique glow, asymmetry, and mysterious features. When I finally felt ready to paint it, soccer season had ended, I was still without a car, and despite being an avid bus rider, no routes passed by the building. This was, of course, well before Uber. So, I decided to paint it from memory, without having studied it in detail. The result wasn’t entirely accurate, but it was surprisingly close. Through this process, I quickly realized that this approach allowed me to delve into and better understand the unconscious part of myself that was initially drawn to the building.
