As a huge admirer of Henri Matisse’s works, such as The Red Studio and The Studio, Quai Saint-Michel, I initially approached painting Dining Room with a focus on the composition of the chair legs. It seemed like a simple design choice at the time. However, as I continued to work on it, I discovered a deeper significance in the objects depicted, which led to the creation of Living Room. This painting prompted me to revisit the moment I took the photo that inspired it.

I was alone in the house, with the kids staying with my ex. Sitting on the floor, a position I sometimes enjoy, I noticed how the quietness of the house was reflected in the scene. The arrangement of the chairs suggested the recent presence of people, now absent. In contrast, a set table with chairs pulled in implied an anticipation of arrival. This scene of tranquil solitude captured my sense of peace during that brief, solitary moment.
